After leaving The Rockaway around October 56, I spent a few months ashore at
Marine Inspection. I was next assigned to the USCGC Campbell WPG-32, approximately March 1957.
I joined the K.C. Fire Department and served for 35 years, retiring as a
Fire Captain. I have three daughters and four grandchildren.
I have been in contact with Bill Madigan, Ralph Huck and Bob Lupton.
Also talked to Bob Clow in Florida.
Sure would like to hear from all of my shipmates.

We had a leak in B1, our fuel oil transfer lines leaked,and one lifeboat
leaked and sank. I have 8mm movies I put on tape of the storm we went through
at that time. Aboard for 1 cadet cruse. We even towed a sea plane off Bermuda.

Traveled through the Panama Canal and became a shellback aboard the Rockaway in 68.

Stationed at Base St. George after boot camp in 1950
Delivered coal to lighthouses on CGC OAK, an old buoy tender
Graduated from YN school and assigned to Rockaway
Transferred to Marine Inspection office in Manhattan
CGC Spencer in 1953 for one weather patrol.
Discharged from active duty as YN3 at CG Yard, Curtis Bay, MD
Sailed 10 years with Military Sea Transportation Service MSTS as Assistant Purser.
Left MSTS in 1965 to work with the CG as a civilian and a Reservist, serving in California,
CG Headquarters, Yorktown, VA and Governors Island, NY
Progressed to Chief Yeoman and Ship's Clerk/Personnel Admin (W-2)
Selected to LTJG and promoted up the line to CDR.
Retired in 1988 and recalled in 1989 to active duty on Governor's Island, NY
with MLCLANT Civil Rights Officer
Served as Asst. Chief, Personnel Division until retiring again 1993.

Served aboard the Rockaway off and on during that period, was back and
forth between CCGD3 Comm. Center and the Rockaway. Was aboard when we
lost Cmdr. J.R. Hinnant. He was an excellent officer and was very well
like by his crew.

My father is Conrad Connie W. Ward. He served on board from 1950 to 1953,
including the tragic loss of Capt James R. Hinnant. My father died 12/19/1994 at
age 63. If anyone remembers him or has any photos, I would love to hear from you.

The ROCKAWAY was my first assignment out of Boot Camp. I left the
ROCKAWAY to go to YN/SK School in Groton and then served aboard the CGC SPENCER
(WPG 36). Eventually, I went to OCS in 1956 at the Academy, graduated on 29 June 1956 and then on to Flight
Training. I was stationed at CGAS San Francisco, CGAD Argentia, CGAS Elizabeth City, NC, and CGAS Barbers Point,
Hawaii where I retired on 1 March 1970 with a little over 21 years as a LCDR. Had a great Coast Guard career,
was always with great personnel and got all the right breaks and I WOULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!

This is a great website. So many memories - A few; Gitmo-Don't give
any ammo to those guys in the hills 1957 (we now know who those guys were)
Haiti R&R, Bermuda Standby,Ocean Station B in August then in January,Hump Day,
Great coffee for the 4to8 watch...All in all a memorable Year and a half.
I do recognize some names on the muster list and maybe soon be able to contact.

When Captain Hinnant was lost inspecting the screws, the cause was
the Brooklyn Navy Yard never fixed the screws properly after they fouled on
mooring lines at St. George, Staten Island, on Thanksgiving, 1949.
