Great shipmates = great duty ! Curtis Bay yard where the mount came off and oceano gear came on, the bent shaft in the Canal Zone, Eastropac 2&3 are some great memories. Fantastic to see so many names from the past but where are the three other double first initial ETs from Chief Smith's crew? I really wanted to finish my enlistment on board The Rock but LORAN duty in Udorn Thailand was in store. What a blast that was! A dozen Coasties among about a few thousand USAF officers and men. They couldn't figure us out and how we could get so much done with so few men and so little supplies. My health is starting to go but a hope that I can hang on for the next reunion (Wilmington, this October?) Hope to get some e-mails or calls from you guys.

TAYLOR, Sol Dr. ( SK3 54-55 )
On the Rock his name was "Sol Chatowitz"
Updated Jul 01, 2008
I served on the Roc from April 1954 to October 1955. I came directly from Ellis Island to the ship in drydock at the Brooklyn Navy Yard when Ellis Island was officially closed down in April, 1954. I recall the harrowing days of hurricanes Connie and Diane in August 1955 and the rescue of the crew of the British freighter Wychwood., I still have B&W 35mm pictures of the event.
I was curious as to the fate of the Roc and went on line and found so many former Roc crew still around--plus a few no longer with us. My memory is fuzzy as to names, so most of those from my service period did not sound familiar. I recall a DiStefano, a Naka (probably Nakamura), a Ski (his name ended in "ski" and was our laundry guy). I was SK3 and worked in the tiny engineering office under Lt Aikenhead. Capt Steele was the CO and Zinck the XO. We had lots of fun in Spain, Holland and Denmark. We escorted the Eagle across the Atlantic on its summer cadet cruise. Some of our Islanders crew got drunk in port and spent most of the cruise in the brig. Some of them also got the "clap".
I wish I had searched a few years earlier since I have nephews in south Jersey and would have gladly attended a reunion at Cape May where I did boot camp from Dec 1953-Feb 1954. I kept my reserve status until October 1970. I am a retired college professor and since 1985 have been a full time real estate agent. I have four married children ages 28-44 and five young grandchildren.
Send me an email and maybe reignite my fuzzy memory.

The reception by the personnel at the Base could not have been nicer.
