BECKER, Wayne ( LTJG 67 ) New Jersey
I was only on board Rockaway for a year, 1967. During the time, she was serving as an oceanographic ship and was berthed at Base St. George at the up-river tip of Staten Island. Our family was new; my wife Jeannie and I had been married for less than a year, and she was pregnant as we moved down from Portland, Maine where I had been an engineer on a sister-ship, the Cook Inlet. (This was planned as a short assignment before I was to go to oceanography post-graduate school, which turned out to be ocean engineering, the subject of a little story farther on. I sailed as her First Lieutenant/Gunnery Officer and as assistant oceanography officer.) We lived on Governors' Island, still in transition from Army ownership -- our first and only time in government quarters in a 30-year career -- which had its pros and cons. Overall, it was very good for us at the time, especially considering the security of the place and the length of Rockaway's cruises.
I recall one in particular. We had just been out for a week, not far from New York, but far enough to allow Jeannie to have our first of five children alone. (The story goes that she saw the ship off, took the ferry back to Manhattan, then to Governor's Island to get things ready, then back across the two ferries again to give birth at Staten Island's Baley Seaton Marine Hospital.) Another week, and we were out again for three-months, through the Panama Canal, and down the coast of South America, and up again, as far as El Salvador, as part of an international oceanographic effort to get an overview of the Eastern Tropical Pacific ("EASTROPAC",) to allow better understanding of events like El Nino. It was long and interesting, and we made port stops all the way up and down the coast, a learning experience for all on board.
One of the challenges (aggravations) of this was coming to grips with the conflict of expectations that was built into the way we tried to operate.

Came on board the Rockaway July 4th weekend in 1958 out of RM school in Groton. We were lucky we did not make to many wx cruises during my time on board. We had a few Bermuda trips, a Reserve trip to Nova Scotia and a cadet cruise in the summer of 1959.
Was stationed at Group Cape May NMK Radio after I left the Rockaway until I got out in June of 1960 to start college. Keep up the good work on this site.

I have a real soft spot in my heart for this Ship. It was my first one. Anyone who ever served on this Ship is family, as far as I'm concerned! Hope to see you in Orlando next year. It won't be difficult for me since I live 225 miles away!
She was a fantastically beautiful ship. It was blue and had a white star on the bow. We were at pier 92 and docked behind the California. We loaded ammo for 5 days solid before leaving Seattle. It was literally a floating ammunition dump! That was the reason I left it in mid 43.

Hello to everyone. Wish I could attend this years reunion.
I reported onboard Rockaway in June 1970. After completing boot camp and taking leave, I reported as a Seaman Apprentice. The ship was tied up at "Yankee" pier on Governor's Island. Her designation at that time was an "oceanographic research vessel" (WAGO 377). Of course, I was assigned to the deck force. Did my share of chipping and painting. First deploment was the "Med" cruise of 1970. We followed an ocean current across the Atlantic to the North Africa, spent time in the western part of the Med, visited Morocco (Tangiers), made a stop in Gibralter for fuel, then onto Lisbon, and Southhampton. Made my first visit to London (I was later assigned to the Activities Europe staff). Eventually, I was assigned as the CPO mess cook (we use to say that was as good as having a "crow" on your sleeve. Good bunch of Chiefs. Made an MST cruise, with an unexpected stop in St. John's, Newfoundland because one of the Officers poked himself in the eye with a chart. I left the Rockaway in November and went to SK "A" school. So, only had a short tour, but a lot of memories of being onboard. I hope to make it to a reunion soon. Thanks. Reported from boot camp as my first assigment. Served in deck dept until I was assigned as a storekeepper striker, then assigned to e-divison as log office SK. Does any one remember the charlie patrol we pulled in Dec of 58 (made it back the day before xmas) when we hit some pretty heavy seas and came back with heavy damage including damaged 5" mount, no life lines and the loss of a couple of life boats? It sure has stuck in my mind. I have served on 2 cutters since then but have never had a ride like that one. Looking forward to reunion.

That night was the first time (and the last) that I heard someone pipe the Captain with an "on the double." Good web site; good luck to all.

I attended the reunion last year in Florida and am looking forward to the next one in Cape May in October. This is a great website and it sure is good to make contact with old shipmates. I have some wonderful memories of the years spent on the Rockaway and would like to hear from others to share experiences. I've been trying to find Jared Kearny, Harold Herlburt and Walter Nausley.

I really enjoyed the reunions at Cape May, NJ and Florida. My wife wouldn't let me go to Arizona this year but I'll be at the next one in NC.

Glad I found this site.
I have many fond memory's aboard the Rockaway, from the storm in the north Atlantic which caused considerable damage (late 1965), to the cadet cruise in the great lakes, Gitmo, and the three oceanographic cruises we made. I was transferred to Captain of the Port, N.Y in the late spring of 1968 and discharged in July. I spent the next 3 years as a sheet metal apprentice, until I got the urge to go back in the Coast Guard, in the spring of 1971. I was stationed on the USCGC Magnolia, it was decommissioned 3 months later. I was transfered to Group Monterrey, made first class a month latter, and stayed there until I was discharged in 1974. My wife and I moved to Rohnert Park, Ca. at that time and finished my apprenticeship. I retired from the sheet metal trade in March 2002. I would love to here from anyone who served with me aboard the Rockaway.

I was on the Rockaway in 1950 when we lost Captain Hinnant and remember seeing his daughter when she visited the Rockaway before we went out on that weather patrol. I would like to tell her that her father had to go over the fantail to free up the screws because of the storm coming up. He was one of the finest men I have ever known.
I was transferred to the CGC Gentian in 1952, then returned to the Rockaway in 1953 to 1955. I made the 1954 Cadet Cruise and was aboard when Hurricane Diane forced us to abandon the British Freighter Wychwood. I had 6 years in the regulars and 10 years in the reserves. I now make "Jesus Knot Boards" with the skills I learned in the Coast Guard. So far I have made over 1,151 boards and over 100 hang in 33 Foreign Countries. You can see one on my web site (below). I would also like to make a few Rockaway Boards for my old shipmates. I hope you'll get back to me.

Many memories of her. Especially of going fishing in Gitmo and someone fired a shot over the outboard board we were in. Man at the pier said the Cubans did that to scare people. He was right...I was scared.

The reception by the personnel at the Base could not have been nicer. For me it had even greater appeal, in that it was forty-nine years ago when I reported to Cape May for Boot Camp - October 12th, 1954. Many changes since then. We look forward to the next reunion wherever it may be held.
