My wife Anne and I would like to say "WELL DONE" to all
those responsible for organizing the reunion at Cape May. We had a
wonderful time. The accomodations were great. The reception by the
personnel at the Base could not have been nicer. For me it had even
greater appeal, in that it was forty-nine years ago when I reported to
Cape May for Boot Camp - October 12th, 1954. Many changes since then. We
look forward to the next reunion wherever it may be held. |

Especially Mike Carmody who worked with me in the EM shop. Remember the
trip to St. Johns and the summer in the Caribbean. I'll never forget the
stop in San Juan and the initiation after crossing the equator. Good times
and great memories. Retired at EECEN in 1997 and now work for the Cape May - Lewes Ferry. Best wishes to all my old shipmates. |

at CAPE MAY, NJ and Radioman Class A School on Governors Island. I was on

Search and Rescue Air Station at Floyd Bennet Field. Honorably discharged
in 1974 and have been living in Connecticut since. |

I was only on board Rockaway for a year, 1967. During
the time, she was serving as an oceanographic ship and was berthed at Base
St. George at the up-river tip of Staten Island. Our family was new; my
wife Jeannie and I had been married for less than a year, and she was
pregnant as we moved down from Portland, Maine where I had been an
engineer on a sister-ship, the Cook Inlet. (This was planned as a short
assignment before I was to go to oceanography post-graduate school, which
turned out to be ocean engineering, the subject of a little story farther
on. I sailed as her First Lieutenant/Gunnery Officer and as assistant
oceanography officer.) We lived on Governors' Island, still in transition
from Army ownership -- our first and only time in government quarters in a
30-year career -- which had its pros and cons. Overall, it was very good
for us at the time, especially considering the security of the place and
the length of Rockaway's cruises. I recall one in particular. We had just been out for a week, not far from New York, but far enough to allow Jeannie to have our first of five children alone. (The story goes that she saw the ship off, took the ferry back to Manhattan, then to Governor's Island to get things ready, then back across the two ferries again to give birth at Staten Island's Baley Seaton Marine Hospital.) Another week, and we were out again for three-months, through the Panama Canal, and down the coast of South America, and up again, as far as El Salvador, as part of an international oceanographic effort to get an overview of the Eastern Tropical Pacific ("EASTROPAC",) to allow better understanding of events like El Nino. It was long and interesting, and we made port stops all the way up and down the coast, a learning experience for all on board. One of the challenges (aggravations) of this was coming to grips with the conflict of expectations that was built into the way we tried to operate. This was at a time when the Coast G |

There are many memories from my time on the Rockaway that will always be with me, especially a particularly nasty storm on one of the weather patrols. I enjoyed my tour of duty on the ROCKAWAY - most of it
anyway - which included six weather patrols and two Bermuda Standbys. This
is a great website. It has brought back a lot of warm memories. I look
forward to seeing you at the reunion. |

Reported from boot camp as my first assigment. Served in
deck dept until I was assigned as a storekeepper striker, then assigned to
e-divison as log office SK. Does any one remember the charlie patrol we
pulled in Dec of 58 (made it back the day before xmas) when we hit some
pretty heavy seas and came back with heavy damage including damaged 5"
mount, no life lines and the loss of a couple of life boats? It sure has
stuck in my mind. I have served on 2 cutters since then but have never had
a ride like that one. Looking forward to reunion. |

Many memories of her. Especially of going fishing in
Gitmo and someone fired a shot over the outboard board we were in. Man at
the pier said the Cubans did that to scare people. He was right...I was
scared. Remember the Hatuey beer in the white hat club and the German Destroyer that was there while we were. Still have a few pictures of that era. |
